At common speeds
| Speed | Typical of | Time for your file |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbit/s | A weak mobile signal | — |
| 10 Mbit/s | ADSL | — |
| 50 Mbit/s | 4G, VDSL | — |
| 100 Mbit/s | Cable, good 4G | — |
| 300 Mbit/s | 5G | — |
| 1 Gbit/s | Fiber | — |
| 10 Gbit/s | Fast fiber, a wired local network | — |
Connections are sold in bits per second, files measured in bytes, and a byte is 8 bits: 100 Mbit/s brings at most 12.5 MB/s. A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000³ bytes, a gibibyte (GiB) 1,024³, 7 % more; Windows counts in GiB but writes GB.
A download rarely gets the whole line: the network's headers take about 5 %, and Wi-Fi, the other devices on the connection or the server often take more. Count on 90 % of the speed at best.
