Liters per 100 km count what a car burns over a distance, miles per gallon how far it goes on a gallon: the higher the first, the lower the second. 6.5 L/100 km is 36 mpg in US gallons, 43 in UK gallons, a UK gallon being 20 % larger.
Take the consumption from the car's trip computer if you can: the maker's official figure is usually 10 to 20 % below what it uses on the road, more on the motorway, in the cold or with a load. An electric car's consumption counts what leaves the battery; charging loses another 10 % or so on the way in.
